Medical Technician

Histology Technicians (HT) personnel services for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the VA Central California Health Care System (VACCHCS).

Description:

• Work with Technologists to assist in the preparation, examination and analysis of lab samples and specimens.

• Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.

• Setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.

Education:

• Successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of the training course (Successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of the training course as described in (a) above for Client-3; or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled.) or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled.

Qualification:

License:

Must have a current Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist license, proof of current license must be provided prior to in-processing, and at the licensure renewal date.

All continuing education courses required for maintaining license must be kept up to date. Documentation verifying current certification shall be provided by the Contractor to the COR on an annual basis for each year of contract performance or upon request.

Technical Proficiency:

HT(s) shall be technically proficient in the skills necessary to fulfill the government's requirements, including the ability to speak, understand, read, and write English fluently.

Contractor personnel shall be responsible for abiding by the VA Facility's Medical Staff By-Laws, rules, and regulations (referenced herein) that govern medical staff behavior.

Training (BLS, ACLS, CPRS, and VA MANDATORY):
All contractor HT(s) with access to any personal health information (PHI) records (electronic or paper) will be required to complete VA Information Security, VHA Privacy Policy, and Rules of Behavior Training prior to their first scheduled day. This training must also be completed annually.

Standards of Care:
• HT(s)' care shall cover the range of routine an complex histological procedures.
• Technical disciplines include: preparing technically adequate slides of tissue sections by processing tissue blocks; embedding, cutting, staining, and cover slipping, performing needle biopsies, frozen section procedure, and assisting with autopsy procedures, including preparing the body for dissection. The work performed shall be of a quality meeting or exceeding currently recognized national standards as established by:
o VA Standards: VHA Directive 2006-041 "Veterans' Health Care Service Standards?
o The professional standards of The Joint Commission (TJC)
o The standards of the American Hospital Association (AHA)
